Cortland vs. Onondaga CC | 2024 Fall Scrimmage (1 of 2) | NCAA College Lacrosse | Extended Clips

10/11/2024 - The first of two scrimmages between two good Upstate NY college programs. It was a beautiful fall night for lacrosse at Cortland's top-shelf stadium. Pace University was supposed to be the third team to play, but they had to cancel. So, Cortland split into two teams and played two scrimmages against OCC and then played an intrasquad scrimmage afterward. The Red Dragons had over 80 players at the time, so it worked out for them to split their guys up.

  • McDonogh vs. Boys' Latin | 2024 MIAA Boys' Lacrosse | Extended Clips
    5/17/24

McDonogh vs. Boys' Latin | 2024 MIAA Boys' Lacrosse | Extended Clips

04/23/24 - The string of great games between these two monsters continued as another one came down to the wire. Two teams loaded with talent, high-level college commits and a distaste for each other sorted it out on Lake Avenue. An appetizer for what will likely be the main course at some point in the playoffs.

Syracuse vs. Cornell | Double OT | 2024 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse | Extended Clips

04/02/2024 - This is the one you've been looking for. One of the craziest games of the season. It took double OT to get it sorted out, but nobody would have guessed that from the early going. It was a cold, rainy, windy night at Cornell's Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca. Perfect for an Upstate NY battle of grit.

I had some trouble with the audio for the first 3+ minutes of footage but got it cleared up after that. Enjoy this instant classic.

03/27/24 - Malvern Prep brought a #3 national ranking (Inside Lacrosse) into their matchup with #6 Boys' Latin at US Lacrosse HQ in Sparks, MD. It was a back-and-forth slug fest until the end to decide a winner. I love watching these early-season matchups with out-of-conference national powerhouses.

03/24/24 - #3/#4 Duke takes on #6/#9 Denver at Archbishop Spalding HS in Severn, MD. It was a beautiful day and great atmosphere for lacrosse. Duke looked to bounce back from a 10-4 loss at the Dome in Syracuse. Denver came in fresh off a win over Ohio State and boasting a 6-1 record. The refs swallowed their whistles and let the boys play. Despite a relatively low score, the game was fast-paced and exciting.

    3/14/24

Cornell vs. Ohio State - 2024 NCAA Men's Lacrosse

03/02/24 - On a cold, rainy day in Upstate NY, Cornell and Ohio State scrapped hard. The game was PHYSICAL with vicious battles for groundballs, particularly on the face-offs. Cornell's CJ Kirst (#15) showed why he is a contender for the Tewaaraton this year, with 7 goals and 1 assist. His teammate, attackman Michael Long (#1), had 3 goals and 4 assists. The two put on an offensive clinic.

Cornell's energy was through the roof from warm-ups until the final whistle. It was the same with them when I saw them scrimmage Maryland in the fall. With that type of spirit and the talent they bring, I can see them having the potential to make a run to Final 4 weekend.

It wasn't like OSU was flat. They played hard and battled throughout. But Cornell was on another level. It was fun watching Caleb "Big Tasty" Fyock starting in the goal as a freshman and making multiple big saves. He certainly wasn't afraid of the stage. OSU's face-off duo of Tommy Burke and Jack Oldman combined to win 18 of 30 to give the Buckeye's the edge at the FO X.

McDonogh vs. Boys' Latin | NHSLS - Summer 2023 Championship - White Session | Extended Clips

06/30/23 - McDonogh and Boys' Latin squared off for the Championship of the NHSLS White Summer Session. These teams are known for having epic battles. For each of the past two years, these teams met in the MIAA semifinals with amazing endings. In 2022, McDonogh won with a controversial buzzer beater. In 2023, they won again in OT. McDonogh would go on to be crowned champs in both years.

This game was televised on ESPN and was delayed for several hours due to torrential downpours, heavy lightning and a tornado warning. Once the storm subsided, it was a pretty nice night, despite some isolated rain at times.

McDonogh vs. Taft | NHSLS - Summer 2023 | Extended Clips

06/30/23 - Another great NHSLS matchup between high-level national powers that came down to the wire.

McDonogh finished the season ranked #2 by Nike/USA Lacrosse and #3 by IL after going 17-1 en route to winning their 2nd straight MIAA Championship with a 14-5 win in the title game over Calvert Hall. This came after an 8-7 OT barnburner over Boys' Latin in the semi-final game.

The 2023 Inside Lacrosse final rankings had Taft at #11 following a 15-2 record where they repeated as Western New England Founder League Champs. This got them no love in the Nike/USA Lacrosse rankings where they were nowhere to be found.

07/08/23 - What a game. This was the first-round game between the two teams that would face each other in the championship game. Unfortunately, the championship game was called for lightning a few minutes in. Seeing how this game went, it was a real shame to not see a rematch. Spoiler alert - this game comes down to the wire, so do yourself a favor and watch until the end.

The game was physical and scrappy from start to finish. Goalie play was excellent from both teams. There was a great battle at the face-off X between top-shelf recruits. The field was littered with players that have since committed to a multitude of high-level college programs.

06/30/23 - Lawrenceville finished the 2023 season ranked #1 in the country by both Inside Lacrosse and Nike/USA. They went 19-1, including beating Brunswick in double OT to take home the Prep Nationals title.

Loyola finished the season ranked 14th in the Nike/USA rankings and outside IL's top 25, going 11-8 overall. This includes several big wins, the most notable being over McDonogh, who finished the season ranked #2 by Nike/USA and #3 by IL. Culver Academy vs. Malvern Prep | NHSLS - Summer 2023 | Extended Clips

06/30/23 - Another Summer NHSLS battle between program powerhouses. I missed a bunch of the first quarter and it was 1-1 when I started filming.

Culver finished the 2023 season ranked 6th by Nike/USA and 8th by Inside Lacrosse after going 17-3. After starting the season 6-0, Culver lost to St. Anthony's and then turned around beat Boys' Latin 13-5 the next game to reestablish themselves. Their other two losses came at the hands of Hill Academy. They beat Western Reserve in OT for the MSLA Midwest Championship after beating WR three weeks earlier by a much larger 17-2 margin.

Malvern Prep ended up ranked 11th by Nike/USA and 12th by IL after posting a 16-7 record and winning their 4th straight Inter-Ac Tourney Championship over Haverford, who handed MP two of their seven loses earlier in the season. Malvern played a brutal schedule that saw them drop five straight games to highly ranked teams and have their other two losses come down to OT.

06/30/23 - The 2023 Inside Lacrosse final rankings had Taft at #11 following a 15-2 record where they repeated as Western New England Founder League Champs. IL had Calvert Hall finishing with a #15 ranking after going 11-6 and making it the MIAA Championships.

Nike/USA rankings had a much different idea of where the teams fit in. They had Calvert Hall ranked 12th in their final rankings. Taft was nowhere to be found in their top 25. They didn't even get any votes/mentions in the "also considered" section.

While the summer NHSLS is certainly not an answer to who was better in the '23 spring season, it did allow the both programs to battle it out for bragging rights for not only their schools, but their leagues and regions.

  • #12 Calvert Hall vs. #15 Loyola - MIAA Semifinal - Extended Clips - 2023 High School Lacrosse
    5/18/23

#12 Calvert Hall vs. #15 Loyola - MIAA Semifinal - Extended Clips - 2023 High School Lacrosse

05/16/23 - In the second game of the MIAA Semifinal double-header, the 2nd-seeded Calvert Hall Cardinals took care of business against the 3rd-seeded Loyola-Blakefield Dons. Just a week before, CH beat Loyola in their last regular season game by a score of 6-5. And that was after a relatively high scoring second half. At half-time, they were tied 1-1.

This time around, the Dons came out of the gates hot, going up 3-0 before the Cards knew what hit them. They built their lead to 6-2 before Calvert Hall mounted their comeback. Senior attackman, Shuey Kelly, put the team on his back and scored the next three goals to bring his team within one at 6-5 heading into half-time. His final goal came with just 5 seconds left in the half.

Whatever happened in the locker room worked for the Hall. They came out blazing and turned their 1-goal deficit entering the 3rd quarter into a 3 goal lead coming out. This time, they scored their final goal of the quarter with just 6 seconds left, bringing the score to 10-7.

The fourth quarter would end up being a 1-1 stalemate as neither team could generate much offense against the other's solid defense. Of course, that was fine for Calvert Hall. A 1-1 fourth meant an 11-8 win and a trip to the championship game on Friday night against the #1 seeded and 2nd-ranked team in the country - McDonogh Eagles.

For Loyola, a team that didn't make the playoffs a year ago, they have to be proud of their season. They were the only team to hand McDonogh a loss and I can't imagine many people would have guessed they would be playing in Annapolis at this point of the year. Congrats to the Dons on a fantastic job.

Calvert Hall, a team that started the season at 1-4 (albeit against some of the top teams in high school lacrosse) is now one game away from taking the throne of the top conference in the land. I've now watched them for two seasons start at one level and finish at another. In less than 24 hours, we'll see if they can take it all the way to the top floor. On to Loyola's Ridley Field Complex for the final showdown on Friday night.

    Notes:

    - Thanks to Lew (@lewsflicks on IG) for sending me the clip of Loyola's 8th goal. While I was trying to run to the bathroom during a time-out, my lack of speed cost me to miss the goal. But Lew is a team player and hooked his slow, old brother up!

#2 McDonogh vs. #13 Boys' Latin - MIAA Semifinal - Extended Clips - 2023 High School Lacrosse

05/16/23 - One year later, it's another semifinal barnburner with McDonogh beating Boys' Latin in OT. WHAT....A....GAME.... The McDonogh Eagles came into the game with a #2 national ranking and the #1 seed in the MIAA tourney. The Boys' Latin Lakers came in ranked 13th in the country and seeded 5th in the tourney. The ranking disparity didn't seem to phase BL much as they took this game to the wire and had opportunities to win in OT.

McDonogh built a 5-0 lead early before Boys' Latin got on the board and closed the gap to 5-3 going into halftime. BL was still down by two heading into the 4th but a figured out a way to knot things up with a goal by Jackson Walsh to get them to 6 and then followed with Parker Hoffman winning the next faceoff and burying one of his own to get them to 7 with 8:46 left to go. There was a lot of tension that final stretch as both teams had their opportunities and relied on their goalies for some clutch saves.

In OT, BL had a couple nice opportunities, but the Eagles' goalie, Aiden Seibel, was up to the task and gave McDonogh's offensive weapons the chance they needed.

The top recruit in the country, McCabe Millon, played the hero and stuck an off-hand jump shot high to high from about 12 yards to send his Eagles to the championship and the Lakers home for the season. His "heartbreaker" celebration was certainly accurate. I'm not the only one who could feel Boys' Latin's pain as history repeated itself.

The Eagles will take on the Calvert Hall Cardinals on Friday night at Loyola University's Ridley Field for all the marbles. Get ready for a battle royal.

  • #13 Boys' Latin vs. #17 St. Mary's - Extended Clips - MIAA Quarterfinals - 2023 High School Lacrosse
    5/17/23

#13 Boys' Latin vs. #17 St. Mary's - Extended Clips - MIAA Quarterfinals - 2023 High School Lacrosse

05/12/23 - Man, do I get spoiled watching some great high school lacrosse here in Maryland. This was the second MIAA quarterfinal I got to catch after watching the Loyola/St. Paul's game. I just love the feel of a night game at St. Mary's Pascal Field. They draw a great crowd, including a ton of kids running around behind the goal around the concession stand. The hill across from the stands is lined with people. The stands are right on top of the field and there aren't many seats, which makes it seem even more packed. It's just a great scene. Oh - and whoever is spinning the music in the press box throughout the game is on point.

While the home crowd was disappointed the Saints didn't come away with the win, they got to watch a good, high-level game. The BL fans came in force, including a pumped up student section. BL gave them what they were looking for as they brought the Lake Show on the road.

The Lakers, took the W behind stellar play from goalie Dylan Cadigan, 6G,1A from attackman Spencer Ford and strong face-off play from Parker Hoffman to go along with his 3 goals. BL was also strong on D, clears, transition and controlling the middle of the field. The Lakers played a complete game in the win.

St. Mary's had their moments, too. By the time I got there and got set on the sideline, it was already halfway through the first quarter. At the end of the 1st, BL was leading 3-2. Then, it was 8-2 heading into halftime. The Saints didn't quit, though, and stormed back with a 5-3 3rd quarter to pull within striking range at 11-7.

BL wasn't about to let them back all the way. The D held strong and they took care of the ball to seal the win and prevent any hopes of St. Mary's finding a run.

Nick Golini led the Saints on the scoreboard with 4 goals. St. Mary's will say goodbye to a large senior class who have played some incredible lacrosse over the past few years. While they're heartbroken their season ended short of the MIAA semifinals, they can take pride in knowing they've been playing some of the best lacrosse in the country.

BL will now take on #1-seeded McDonogh in a rematch of last year's epic, last-second loss in the semifinals. It's going to be ridiculous.

#16 Loyola vs. St. Paul's - Extended Clips - MIAA Quarterfinals - 2023 High School Lacrosse

05/12/23 - It was a hot and sunny day with temps in the 80s, and hotter on the turf, as the 3rd-seeded Dons of Loyola took on the 6th-seeded Crusaders of St. Paul's. With both teams showing great improvement from a year ago to make the playoffs, it was two classic MIAA programs playing on historic Hargaden Field at Loyola to kick off the MIAA tourney.

Hargaden is one of two stellar stadiums for lacrosse that Loyola gets to call home. Nestled next to a beautiful school building behind one goal, and the perfect-sized stands behind one of the sidelines for a game like this, it was a great site to host a game of this magnitude. Loyola's student section was rocking the whole game and St. Paul's brought a nice crew of their own.

Loyola went up 4-0 early in what looked like the makings for a potential blowout. But St. Paul's regrouped and had the game knotted at 7-7 in the 3rd quarter before Loyola reasserted themselves with a 4-goal run that put them up for good.

The win earns the Dons a trip to the semifinal game against 2nd -seeded Calvert Hall at the Navy-Marine Corp Stadium in Annapolis. They'll get a chance to avenge a 6-5 loss to the Cardinals from their last regular season game of the week before.

    5/8/23

    #1 St. Anthony's vs. #6 Haverford - Extended Clips - 2nd Half - 2023 High School Lacrosse

05/06/23 - It was a beautiful day for pumped up crowd to watch a high-level, top-10 national showdown between the St. Anthony's Friars of Long Island, NY and the Haverford School 'Fords from the Main Line suburbs of Philly.

St. Anthony's brought an undefeated 11-0 ranking to the game while Haverford was 13-2, with losses to highly-ranked McDonogh and Lawrenceville. St. Anthony's struck first, but it was Haverford who led the rest of the game, but never very comfortably. It was nip and tuck at the end as St. Anthony's closed the gap in the 4th quarter and had opportunities late to tie it up.

The 'Fords were led in scoring by Wells Flinn (3G, 2A), Ryan DiRocco (3G, 1A), Brady O'Kane (3G) and Colin Zeller (2G, 1A). I got to coach Ryan DiRocco in club lacrosse a few years ago, so that was fun watching him light it up at the highest level of HS lacrosse. Ben McCarthy won 21 of 31 face-offs to help keep Haverford in the driver's seat.

Owen Duffy lived up to the hype for St. Anthony's with 4 goals and 4 assists. He'll be calling PA his home for college when he takes his talents to Penn State.

It was also fun for me to see Griff Meyer, one of the top face-off men in the '25 class get some action and do well. I coached Griff's brother, Brian, in high school and coached Griff some as he grew up playing youth lacrosse with Ashbee. Brian also took face-offs for us as at Harriton before playing at Lehigh. Griff has a bright future, as well. It was great seeing their Dad, Charlie, too.

Another personal highlight was seeing Owen Huntington and his Dad, Brett. Owen played goalie for Ashbee and is now at Harriton. I hadn't seen him in a few years, so it was tough to believe how different he looks. He's been hitting the weight room!

Well, that's my quick recap of the game and some personal highlights. It was really nice being back in the area I called home for 8+ years to watch some top-notch lacrosse and see some good peeps.

    #7 Maryland vs. Rutgers - Extended Clips - 2nd Half - Big 10 Tourney - NCAA Lacrosse

04/29/23 - 3rd-seeded Maryland hosted 6th-seeded Rutgers for the opening round of the Big 10 Tournament for an 8 PM game under the lights. The Terps' Daniel Kelly had 4G, 1A, freshman Braden Erksa had 1G, 6A and Daniel Maltz had 3G, 1A as the attack lit up the scoreboard. Luke Wierman took care of the face-off X, winning 20 of 27.

Brett Makar showed why he was voted the Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year. He held down the defense and even had a big goal that got had the sidelines swarm him on the field and get a penalty for it. Based on the energy it brought, and the fact that the MDD didn't give up a goal on the penalty, it seemed like a good trade.

All-American defenseman Ajax Zappitello was out of the game with an injury. Freshman Will Schaller took his place, earning his first start in his first post-season game. Will is a family friend, so I was excited to see him do a great job on the field in his first start.

Speaking of friends I was happy to see on the field, it was great seeing Eric Seremet at the game. A former high school teammate, and college opponent, Eric is the Offensive Coordinator for the Scarlet Knights. Last year, he won the award for the top assistant coach in Division 1. He also served as the Head Coach of Air Force for a number of years, among other positions. Bottom line - he's a great guy and coach. I was sad for him to see his season come to an end.

Rutgers put up a good fight and kept things interesting in the end, outscoring Maryland 6-4 in the 4th quarter. Attackman Shane Knobloch had 3 goals. He had a nice one in the 4th quarter as he swept over the top that I missed in the video since I didn't hit freaking record. Sorry, Shane. Attackman Ross Scott had 4 assists as another of Rutgers' point leaders. Rutgers had stretches of solid defense and goalie play throughout the game.

The Terps advance to the Big 10 Semifinals where they don't have to wait long to get a shot at redemption against Hopkins at Homewood. Their first game a week before was one of the best college games of the season. The lacrosse world is excited to see the sequel.

    #5 Loyola-Blakefield vs. #12 Boys’ Latin - Extended Clips - 2nd Half - 2023 MIAA Lacrosse

04/25/23 - The Boys’ Latin Lakers hosted the Dons of Loyola-Blakefield for a battle between two national and MIAA powers.

Loyola came in at 9-2 and riding a seven-game win streak. They were undefeated in MIAA play. BL came in at 8-3, fresh off a 16-7 win over a solid Seven team.

With a lot of parity in the MIAA this year, this game shows how hard it is to predict any game in this talent-rich league. And with the shot clock, the scores can get lop-sided fast if a team is hot or cold on any given day.

On this day, it was the Lakers who were hot in front of their home crowd. A beautiful day at a beautiful venue with a lot of history, it was fun seeing the Lakers hit stride. However, I would have preferred a neck and neck battle that came down to the wire, but they can’t all be like the Maryland/Hopkins game of a few days prior.

    #3 Maryland vs. #7 Johns Hopkins - Extended Clips - 2nd Half - 2023 Lacrosse

Saturday, 4/22/23 - The 3rd-ranked Maryland Terrapins hosted the 7th-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays for the 125th game in the longest and most storied rivalry in college lacrosse. Having lost the past five games to Maryland, the win gave Hopkins back The Rivalry trophy as well as a share of the Big 10 regular season championship, along with Penn State. The Blue Jays also earned a bye for the first round of the Big 10 playoffs. Maryland will host Rutgers.

With thunderstorms and strong winds in the afternoon before the game and a dismal forecast, the game was shaping up to be a mess. But the rain held off for most of the game, with the exception of a few sporadic rain drops. It ended up being a great night for a great game. It was a close battle throughout with multiple lead changes as both teams brought high energy and emotion, along with a fired up crowd of about 6,500.

    #7 McDonogh vs. #10 St. Mary's - Extended Clips - 2nd Half - MIAA Lacrosse

On Tuesday, April 18th, the McDonogh Eagles looked to bounce back from their first loss of the season to the Loyola Dons, who beat them by a goal. This knocked the Eagles off their perch as the #1 ranked team in the country. They entered the game with a 9-1 record.

St. Mary's came into the game at 9-2 with their only two losses coming at the hands of Loyola as well as a huge upset from Victor, out of the Rochester, NY area.

As the score indicates, it was a battle of two staunch defenses and outstanding goalies. McDonogh's goalie, Aidan Seibel, played lights out in securing the win.

With a 6 PM start on a beautiful night, watching a game between two heavyweights at St. Mary's Pascal Field was a real treat. Hopefully, we'll see these teams lock horns again in the playoffs.

On April 11th, the B'ville Bees hosted the F-M Hornets for a showdown between Section 3 rivals. The Bees led 6-4 heading into the 4th quarter before going on an 8-0 run to blow the lead wide open.

The win also marked Coach Wilcox's 100th victory at B'ville. The last few minutes of the video are of the team and families honoring the coaches and celebrating the accomplishment after the game.

I was happy to get back to my hometown of Syracuse and watch some Upstate Lacrosse with my friends who have kids that have played and are currently playing for B'ville. St. Mary's vs. Calvert Hall - Extended Clips - 2nd Half - 2023 MIAA Lacrosse

Calvert Hall headed to St. Mary's Pascal Field for a 7 PM game on 3/31/23. St. Mary's was 6-0 and ranked 5th in the country at the time. Calvert Hall was ranked 22nd in the country, despite a 1-3 record, with all three losses coming to top-20 teams. They would need a win if they hoped to stay in the top 20. St. Mary's wasn't about to let that happen.

As with most of the games I've been shooting lately, I shot photos in the first half and video in the second half. While most of the scoring took place in the first half, there was still a good deal of offensive opportunities in last two corners, though most shots were saved or missed the goal.

It was a special game for a couple of reasons. The game honored two people who passed away recently. Mia Zinn, whose father is the long-time athletic trainer at Calvert Hall, lost her fight to Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of childhood cancer this past February. Pink bandanas printed with "Mia's Army" where worn by many of the fans in attendance. The players on both teams wore pink shoelaces in their cleats.

The game also honored Rob Kavovit, a lacrosse great who played at Syracuse University and died of suicide in 2021. The proceeds from the game benefitted the 15 for Life Foundation, a non-profit foundation in Rob's memory that is aimed at raising awareness for mental health.

    4/2/23

    Michigan vs. Maryland - Extended Clips - 2nd Half - 2023 Lacrosse

Michigan came to College Park on 4/01/23 determined not to be the April Fools. Instead, the Wolverines outplayed the Terps from start to finish to take down the #2 team in the country. Michigan entered the game at 4-4 and unranked. It earned it's biggest win in program history.

I thought about my friend John Paul, who played for Michigan, then coached them as one of the top club teams in the country, then brought them to Division I as their inaugural coach. He laid the foundation for this win years ago. I was lucky to have coached against him and get to know him in my days coaching Cal back in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Once again, I followed my recent routine of shooting photos in the first half and video in the second. I'll have the pics posted on www.proudlacrosse.com in the near future. I also have a bunch of video from after the game of the Michigan guys celebrating with each other, their families/friends and talking with their friends from Maryland. I may post a follow up short video of that or just send it to my old friend and college goalie who has a son on the Michigan team for him to share with any kids/parents in the program. It was fun to see how happy they all were. It showed one of the beautiful aspects of sports.

One of the things I love about what Coach Tillman does with his team is that win or lose, he lets his guys stay after the game the visit with their people before heading to the locker room. I like that after a tough loss like that, the Maryland guys still take time to shake hands, hug and visit with their loved and like ones after the game. Maybe this is common practice among the other college teams, but I've noticed the Terps do every time.

Here's footage from the 2nd half of the Calvert Hall vs. Lawrenceville game from Friday, 3/17/23 at USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, MD. This was part of the FCA Invitational, which included a double header on Friday night with this game followed by St. Paul's (MD) vs. ANC (Academy of the New Church from PA) - clips to follow. Saturday featured another double header with the women of William Smith College taking on Salisbury. This was followed by a men's game pitting Hobart against Providence.

I took photos in the first half and shot video for the 2nd half, which is the formula I've been going with for the past few games. Some favorite pics are currently linked on www.proudlacrosse.com and I'll be uploading the full bunch of them soon.

Calvert Hall came out hot and went up 7-2 in the first quarter and had a four goal lead late in the 2nd quarter. It was all Lawrenceville from then on out as they rolled to a 16-9 finish.

    3/7/23

    Notre Dame vs. Maryland - Extended Clips - 2nd Half & 3 OT - 2023 Lacrosse

The Terps hosted unbeaten Notre Dame at 1 PM on Saturday, 3/4/2023 for what is widely considered the best game in Division 1 lacrosse so far this season. Maryland's stadium is huge by lacrosse standards. Even with a good crowd, which there was (6000+), a stadium like that can just swallow up the fans and energy. But this game was so good, the crowd was raging. It was Youth Lacrosse Day, so lots of kids were there with their respective teams rocking their uniforms. It was a great scene for lacrosse.

I started shooting photos in addition to vids for the past few games and still trying to figure out if it makes sense and how to manage it. For this game, I shot stills in the first half and video for the second half and OT periods. I'm thinking this may be the formula. That way, if it's a good game, I'm getting the video down the stretch when the energy is the highest. This game certainly fit that bill.

When I post "extended clips," they are generally pretty long. But this sets the record so far. There's a about six minutes of post-game footage, but most of the vid is pure game. Once the OTs hit, I kept most of the usable footage in there. It was so tense and dramatic, I thought it was worth keeping it all.

The winning goal and celly to follow has been all over IG and the web in general. But there were a LOT of great plays from both teams leading up to that point. Maryland held a 2-goal lead with just over a minute to play, but the Irish figured out a way to knot it up and force OT. The Kavanagh brothers, especially Pat with the grand finale, were a big part of the story of this game.

But the goalies for both teams were instrumental, making huge saves throughout and at critical times it the OTs. ND senior, Liam Entenmann, showed that senior leadership while making 14 saves in the win. MD freshman, Brian Ruppel, made 12 saves and showed he's more than up to the task of playing big-time ball in his second start in as many games.

It was one of those games where it was a shame that either team had to take a loss. As I've been following Maryland this year and have a connection with a few of the players/families, along with Coach Tillman, so I especially felt for the Terps. They showed their class and how strong their culture is with how they handled the loss. They were gracious in defeat, kept their heads held high as they did their customary visit with family and friends, and then autographed posters for a seemingly endless line of youth lacrosse players who were excited to meet and greet some of their role models.

It was an honor and a pleasure to watch these teams go at it.

    Maryland vs. Richmond - 2023 Lacrosse - Extended Clips - includes pre-game, post-game & tailgate

The defending NCAA Champion Terps hosted the Richmond Spiders for both teams' season opening game on Saturday, 2/4/23. Maryland was ranked #1 and Richmond was #19 in the Nike/USILA pre-season poll. Maryland backed up the ranking with a decisive 15-4 win, including a 13-1 lead after 3 quarters.

Maryland's defense was predictably smothering and physical. Logan McNaney was strong in the net and leading the clears. Solid face-off work and a good showing on offense that featured some new guys in new roles led to the runaway win.

Despite the score, Richmond wasn't without some good plays of their own. Goalie Zach Vigue made some big saves including a point blank stuff. The Spiders were relentless on the ride, earning some turnovers and riding goals. The ride proved to be their biggest offensive weapon in the game. They also created enough offense to make the Maryland goalies earn their saves.

I was frustrated to have missed some good clips. This includes Richmond's first goal, while I was having focus problems. I actually included a short, out of focus clip of it, just so it wouldn't seem ridiculous that I have all these Maryland goals and didn't even show the single goal of the Spiders' first 3 quarters.

I also had a beautiful angle on a goal Owen Murphy (I think) scored. I was in the direct shooting line, zoomed in nicely as he used his defender as a screen to tuck it in the goal. When I watched it, I thought it was the best clip I had gotten so far. Then I saw I wasn't recording. Dang it!!! That ticked me off.

The day before the game was FRIGID with freezing winds. It was brutal. I didn't know how they were going to even get the game in outdoors with the weather reports calling for 18-20 degree real-feel temps during game time. But the sun was shining and winds were tame for most of the game. Of course the sun was shining on the side of the field opposite the bench where we camera people and much of the crowd was watching and soaking up any warmth the sun provided. The teams' benches were in the shade and the guys were all wearing shorts. Even with some sideline heaters, they had to be feeling it.

I figured the tailgate after the game would be brief and understated, due to the weather, which was becoming increasing colder. I was wrong. The Maryland families went big, as usual, including bringing firepits. Richmond looked to have a nice tailgate going on as well, though I was hanging with the Maryland peeps.

All in all, it was a good start to the season. I'm excited to catch some more top-notch lacrosse and see how both teams fare throughout the season.

Notes: Shot w. Sony FX3 camera with 100-400mm GM lens in 4K 120fps. Also used Sony A74 with Sony 24-105 G lens for some pre-game, post game and tailgate footage as well as some stills. This was done in 1080HD so I could keep the frame rate at 120fps.

USA vs. Maryland - Extended Clips - Fall Lacrosse - 2022 (Game 1)

I shot video for Inside Lacrosse of the USA Lacrosse Fall Classic on 10/15/22 at US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, MD. It was billed as "Champs vs. Champs," with the defending NCAA D1 Men's Champion, Maryland, taking on the defending World Champion, Team USA. The Terps played USA twice - once at 9:30 AM (this game) and again at 2:30 pm. The US Team split their current roster into two groups with half playing in the first game and half playing in the second.

Sandwiched in between the men's games was the women's game. Fresh off their 2022 Gold Medal in the World Games, Team USA's Women's Team took on the defending NCAA D1 Champs, the Univ. of North Carolina Tarheels. With 9 of the 19 women from the US Team having been Tarheels themselves, plus Jenny Levy, who is the head coach of both UNC and USA, the game was something of an Ode to Carolina. I'll be posting videos of this game in the near future.

It was a beautiful day for lacrosse. This was my first time at the venue. It's a gorgeous facility with an intimate feel. There are stands on one side and a nice grass hill on the opposite side where groups of people watched sitting on blankets, benches and camp chairs. There were sponsor tents and a fan zone on a hill behind one of the goals and a parking lot with team tailgates going on behind the opposite goal.

This video features extended clips of the first men's game. It was a physical, defensive battle. USA pulled out a 5-4 win. Maryland's '22 grad and Tewaaraton Winner, Logan Wisnauskas sealed the deal for USA, scoring the game winner with under 4 minutes left. Goalies for both teams played great with Logan McNaney and Teddy Dolan shining for the Terps and Jack Concannon, Jack Kelly and Blaze Riorden holding it down for USA. Between them all, there were a LOT of saves. Also, TD Ierlan was masterful taking face-offs for USA.

After the game, Team USA's players did a great job being ambassadors for the game. They stuck around signing autographs for a lot of adoring and appreciative kids and their families.
